Farewell
Message from Ken Horn
Well,
here we are; the Local elections are over and the new
officers have been sworn into their new positions. I am sure
I
speak for all in wishing them much success in the years to come.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Local and its
members for the many years you have allowed me to do something I had
never imagined. Over the years I have had the privilege of meeting many
extraordinary people. I have had the honor to meet President Clinton,
Vice President Gore, senators, representatives, governors, but the CWA
people I have met from District 7 and from across the country will be
the ones I will remember the most.
As I reflect back over the many years I find myself in disbelief when
recalling some of the events that have transpired. When I first
became involved, we were CWA Local 9103 and we represented people
working for Pacific Northwest Bell (PNB) … Oh to have the good old days
back! Then of course we became US West and finally beloved Qwest.
We have been through strikes, downsizing, layoffs, and much more.
During my time in office we at the Local suffered the loss of VP Bob
Iverson and E-Board member Mark Heggie; both have been sorely missed
and will never be forgotten. We have moved the Local to 6 different
locations and have finally found a home.
Also during my tenure both my daughters, Laurie and Susan were married
and our 5 grandchildren Madison, Cater, William, Kendrick an Lukas were
born, much to the delight of Gramma and Papa.
I can’t begin to tell you how very fortunate I was over the years to be
surrounded by some really talented and outstanding people. I came
t realize early on that the [people who work around you and with you
can only make the task at hand that much easier. So, to all the
officers, E-Board members, Chief Stewards, Stewards and committee
members who I have worked with over the years I offer my sincere
appreciation and thanks for all their hard work, which made my job so
much easier. THANKS SO VERY MUCH!
Now, with that said, I feel the need to make one thing perfectly
clear. Those very same people I mentioned above did in fact from
time to time, drive me crazy. You must remember I worked with the
likes of one Bill Woehrle. Just the name alone conjures up some scary
thoughts. Then let us not forget Lisa Dunn. I recall I
almost had to bail her out of jail; she was going to be charged with
GRAND LASRCENY (hotel towel theft). After some smooth talking
they let her off with a slap on the wrist. Oh yeah, let’s not forget
Anne Cunnington; she is now famous throughout District 7 for being the
lady at he Chicago establishment who ordered one of everything from the
appetizer menu, then excused herself to go get a sweater form her room
only to never return; leaving the rest of us with the bill. You
might want to ask her about her reason for this behavior; she might
mention something about her attendance at a ballgame and being
introduced to Jose Cuervo. Jeanne can verify that all of this
info is true and accurate and happened as reported.
The stories could go on and on with the likes of Rose, Tim, Mike,
Jeanne, Cole Slaw Deb, Tony, Rebecca and Oh who could forget my good
buddy Charles, and all the others who I have crossed paths with over
the years. It was Oh SO very hard for a STRAIGHT ARROW such as
myself not to go totally NUTS!
Most important I want to thank my family for their support over the
years. We all need to thank Doreen; she spent many a day and
night at home while I was out of town on union business, and never once
complained. All of you have told me many times Doreen is the one you
liked and she was the one who kept me in line; then and only then did
you tolerate me. So, to my better half I thank you for letting me
play with this group fop questionable people.
In closing I would once again like to thank you all not only for your
support but more importantly for your friendship. |
